Last week Apple released the developer preview for OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion, which draws more new features directly from iOS.

For quite a while we’ve joked that Apple is going to run out of big cat names, and it seems they finally have. Way back in 2001, before most people would even consider buying a Mac, Apple released OS X 10.1 Puma. Pumas and Mountain Lions are the
same animal, but 10.8 is a far cry from 10.1’s aqua interfaced bugginess. Apple has moved to an incremental update approach with their last few operating system revisions, and as such 10.8 Mountain Lion isn’t an “all new cat.” It’s an updated cat, so the reused name makes sense.

This past weekend we had the pleasure of attending the 5th Annual Lights, Camera, Youth Action!, a fundraiser for one of our favorite local organizations, Youth Action Coalition. YAC and their programs create an environment where a diverse group of area youth can discuss their feelings and ideas, feel comfortable expressing them through various media and as a result feel that they're being heard and a part of the world around them. It's a very valuable service, and seeing the youth in the program present their work and ideas it's clear that they excel at it. We got to see a number of them talk about the program and present their work at Lights, Camera, Youth Action!, in addition to stating their intention to expand the program with a dedicated space for their efforts. The event was entirely underwitten (which left-click contributed toward), so all donations went directly to YAC and we hope they're closer to their goal! You can ALWAYS donate to YAC here: http://www.youthactioncoalition.org/contribute/index.html

Wondering what Reese Witherspoon is doing here? This is her character from the film Election, Tracy Flick!

Hello Western MA! You can vote here for The Valley Advocate's Best of the Valley 2012, and if you've had a good experience with us we would be thrilled and honored if you would consider voting for left-click in the Local Computer Store category (it's in the "Material World" section, a little more than halfway down the page). Our ever-expanding and enthusiastic customer base, including many prominent local businesses, is a testament to our technical proficiency and superior customer service. You can see many of our wonderful customers, including Bueno Y Sano, River Valley Market and Cornucopia Foods, talk about their experiences with us in the video below.

left-click strives to be an active member of the Western Massachusetts community. In the last year we had amazing experiences supporting and participating in the Youth Action Coalition's mural unveiling in Amherst, The Cancer Connection's Trikathlon and PBS WGBY's winter fundraiser. We've supported and raised awareness about The Valley Arts Newsletter and the initiative to move the Pleasant Street Video library to Forbes Library. We also focus our advertising budget on supporting many worthy local organizations, including Northampton and Amherst High Schools, the Hampshire Shakespeare Company, local literary magazine Meat for Tea and the Out for Reel! LGBT Film Series. We also had a total blast with everyone taking green screen photos at the last Twist craft fair!

You never know what you're going to get when you randomly pick a winner for a raffle, but we couldn't be happier with the winner of our Holiday iPad Raffle. Meet Lisa MacDonald. Lisa is a senior at Northampton High School where she is the Secretary of their chapter of the National Honor Society and president of Model UN. In fact, the list of awesome stuff Lisa does never quite seems to end; she speaks Chinese and has studied Latin, she got her black belt in Taekwondo and she throws shot put and discus, which she will continue to do at Oberlin College in Ohio this fall! Lisa entered our raffle after seeing it in Thornes' email newsletter. She hasn't used an iPad too much, except playing Fruit Ninja on her Mom's. She told us that's the first thing she's going to do on hers, now that she has one, and is also looking forward to seeing how it can be utilized in the classroom this fall.

Thanks again to everyone who entered, and let's all wish Lisa the best of luck in school this fall!

We are very excited to announce the winner of our Holiday iPad Raffle! We're never quite sure what the best, most truly fair way to select a winner for a raffle is. This time around we have employed the services of Mr. Crumbles, the Psychic Kitten, who will pluck the name of the most deserving winner from the depths of the universe using his mystic crystal ball. Take it away, Mr. Crumbles!

Working in the tech industry, and specifically being in the business of servicing Windows computers as well as Macs, one of the most common problems I see is this: viruses. Countless times the same scene plays out: a frazzled-looking PC user comes in, holding their laptop or desktop, and tells the sad tale of how they were using their computer when, suddenly, they were infected. This can come in many forms: endless pop-ups, fake anti-virus software telling them they need to run a “free scan”, regular program use stopped by crashing, all leading to the computer becoming slow or unusable. Sometimes, I see the same people come back again and again, with the same issue. Read on to learn how to avoid it.

I wanted to write a quick blog post about my recent quest to find the best method of streaming content from the internet on my television set. (This is not a product review, as I have not yet acquired the device I eventually settled on.) First of all, let's talk about my needs- I'm interested in streaming content, not playing local files. This is the biggest distinction you can make when shopping for an internet-enabled device for your television. What that means, in basic terms, is that I'm looking to stream content like Netflix or Pandora, rather than downloading full audio or video files to a local device (like my computer) and playing those files. After shopping around online and consulting with some of my tech-savvy friends, I'm confident that I found the best internet to television device for my needs.
